You might be confused by some of the things that are said on this site. So, I figure a Glossary would be nice to have. It also provides a little comic relief. Al-Dot - nickname given to our bass trombonist, Alex Dotte. He is known for playing notes so absolutely low that they don't even sound like notes. For this reason, we sometimes call him Pfat Al-Dot. See also: Pfat. Bach - one of the great classical composers. Also, the trombone brand of choice among most Wind Ensemble trombonists. See the FAQ for recommendations and price ranges. Boner of the Year - highly-coveted award given out by the trombone section at the annual Band Banquet. Given to someone in the band (usually a senior) who isn't in the trombone section and who we think would be cool enough to play trombone if they hadn't chosen the instrument they now play. Bonermobile - nickname given to Chris Harren's navy blue Cadillac. Boofominimums - nickname for the baritone/euphonium section. "Crotching" - method of tucking your marching charts in the front of your pants during marching band practice. Developed by Matt Durham. Dumb Line - affectionate nickname given to the drum line during marching season, for their tendency to royally screw up during cadences and even sometimes during the show despite putting in MANY more practice hours than the wind section. Somehow, the percussion section is immaculate during concert season. Fish - traditional nickname for freshmen. Newcomers to the band are sufficiently given hell during boot camp and summer band, leading up to Initiation. Freshmen usually share a marching spot amongst themselves, and we don't let trombone freshmen do the Guillotine until the last couple of football games. Gay Billy - nickname for the trombone private lesson teacher at LBJ, Billy Gayman. Guillotine - a truly amazing display of coordination we like to show off at football games and pep rallies. Name comes from the fact that someone may very well get his head knocked off if he screws up during the Guillotine. Other sections try to copy us, but we accept no imitations. Done to the tune of a drum cadence. Grimace - purple, trombone-touting character who was a part of the Ronald McDonald & Friends McDonald's commercials from a while back. Also refers to 1998 graduate and trombone section leader Michael McCorvey, for his uncanny ability to resemble Grimace when wearing all purple. We have adopted Grimace as the Trombone Section Mascot. (Message to drum line: WE WANT GRIMACE BACK.) Peashooter - common nickname for a trombone without a trigger. Most of us that have trombones with F-attachments use our peashooters during marching season. Pfat - not to be confused with "phat". This term is used to comment on the quality (or quantity) of a low note. Usage: "Whoa, that note was pfat!" or "This song has some pfat bass". Saxamophones - nickname given to the saxophone section. Strong and Wrong - phrase coined by the class-of-2001 trombones while under Mr. Gurgel at Kealing JHS. We often used this phrase when we could not play a particular part of the music, but would play it really loud nonetheless. Not used much anymore, because none of us suck now. Talleyman - nickname for assistant band director Damon Talley. Trombone Choir - an ensemble of 10-12 trombonists. We have performed at various events, such as at graduation, the LBJ Showcase, band concerts, and others. The conductor is Chris Harren. Trombone Room - our sacred dwelling place in the LBJ band hall. Aside from being used as a place to keep our trombones, it also houses a lot of trombone memorabilia and... shall we say, "souvenirs" of where we've been. It's also a LOT better than the Trumpet/Tuba Room. Trombotine - slide lubricant of choice for most LBJ trombonists. Now if only it came in a can instead of a tube... |
