LBJ Jaguar Band - The one, the only

The LBJ Trombone section is one of the largest sections in the band. Our reputation as hard workers, fun-loving people, and crazy freaks is known all throughout the band. This year, our section produced one of the two assistant Drum Majors (Chris Harren) and the HR President (Donna Welles), head Drum Major the previous year (Michael Cox), and both Assistant Drum Majors (Henry King and Matt Smith) the year before that. We expect our section to grow greatly next year, as only two seniors will be graduating.

The LBJ Jaguar Band is one of the most-decorated bands in central Texas, and is the largest and most successful organization at LBJ High School. In 1997, we went to the Texas State UIL 4A Marching Contest for the first time since 1982; we were also the first band in any class from Austin to go to the state contest in 9 years (Bowie HS went to the state contest in 1989). Last year (1998-1999), the LBJ Marching Band received a Division I at UIL Marching Contest. For the first time in LBJ history, at the UIL Concert/Sightreading Competition this spring, all 3 of our bands participating in the event (Symphonic II, Symphonic I, and Wind Ensemble) received a Division I. At the San Antonio competition last spring, our Wind Ensemble, Symphonic I, and Jazz I bands all received a Division I and Outstanding in Class, while our Symphonic II band received Division II. This year, the band grew to amazing proportions. And despite our awesome show, we placed 5th at area marching competition and did not advance to the state level. The band made a trip to London and Paris over Spring Break, including a performance at an arts school in London which, thanks to our performance, now has enough credits to become a magnet school. Led by Don Haynes, Travis Ancelet, and Damon Talley, the LBJ Band will dominate the competition into the new millenium.

Lyndon B. Johnson High School at Austin, Texas, is nationally and internationally renowned for its magnet program, The Science Academy of Austin. In a recent Newsweek magazine poll of high schools last year, LBJ ranked #11 in the country, the highest Austin-area high school. The Science Academy and LBJ offer many accelerated programs, including a wide variety Advanced Placement courses (Physics II, Chemistry II, and Biology II, for example), several foreign languages (Spanish, French, German, Latin, and Japanese, for example), and honors programs for fine arts (Band, Orchestra, Choir, and Drama).
