The LBJ Trombone section is one of the largest sections in the band, coming in behind the flutes (*barf*) and the saxophones (*gag*). Our reputation as hard workers, fun-loving people, and crazy freaks is known all throughout the band. This year, our section produced the head Drum Major (Michael Cox), and the previous year, both Assistant Drum Majors (Henry King and Matt Smith). Next year, our section will grow by leaps and bounds, as three seniors are leaving with probably a whole lot of freshmen coming in.
The LBJ Band is one of the most-decorated bands in our area, and is the largest and most successful organization at LBJ High School. Last year (1997-1998), we went to the Texas State UIL 4A Marching Contest for the first time since 1982; we were also the first band in any class from Austin to go to the state contest in 9 years (Bowie HS went to the state contest in 1989). This year (1998-1999), the LBJ Marching Band received a Division I at UIL Marching Contest. For the first time in LBJ history, at the UIL Concert/Sightreading Competition this spring, all 3 of our bands participating in the event (Symphonic II, Symphonic I, and Wind Ensemble) received a Division I. At the San Antonio competition this spring, our Wind Ensemble, Symphonic I, and Jazz I bands all received a Division I and Outstanding in Class, while our Symphonic II band received Division II. Next year, the band is expect to have more members than ever, topping this year's mark of 260. Next year is a state year, and we plan to go all the way with that. Also, our band's spring trip will be to London and Paris over Spring Break 2000.
Lyndon B. Johnson High School at Austin, Texas, is nationally and internationally renowned for its magnet program, The Science Academy of Austin. In a Newsweek magazine poll of high schools last year, LBJ ranked #27 in the country, the highest Austin-area high school. The only other Austin-area school ranked in the top 100 was Westwood High School at Round Rock, Texas, ranked #66. The Science Academy and LBJ offer many accelerated programs, including a wide variety Advanced Placement courses (Physics II, Chemistry II, and Biology II, for example), several foreign languages (Spanish, French, German, Latin, and Japanese, for example), and honors programs for fine arts (Band, Orchestra, Choir, and Drama).
